Lent, Day Eleven, First Saturday of Lent

Lent, Day Eleven, First Saturday of Lent
Dying is trusting in the catcher [part of a troupe of trapese artists]. To care for the dying is to say, "Don't be afraid." Remember that you are the beloved child of God. He will be there when you make your long jump. Don't try to grab him; he will grab you. Just stretch our your arms and hands and trust, trust, trust.

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Our Greatest Gift: A Meditation on Dying and Caring ,  pg 22

Scripture:
This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who draws strength from mere flesh
and whose heart turns away from the Lord.
That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places of the desert,
in a salt land where no one lives.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”Jeremiah17:5-8

 PRAYER
Giving and forgiving God, though I pay lip service to my trust in you, I know that in times of serious travail, I become afraid and grasp at straws instead of your saving grace. Help me to rely on you instead of myself when trouble strikes. Give me trust to hold out my hands and know that you are there. Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Make a list of the gifts you take for granted: life, sight, hearing, mobility, opportunity. Keep this list with you to offset the disappointments that threaten to overwhelm your good judgment and undermine your trust in God's plan.

Lent, Day Ten, First Friday of Lent

Lent, Day Ten, First Friday of Lent
Jesus described the intimacy that he offers as the connectedness between the vine and the branches. I long to be grafter onto Jesus as a branch onto the vine so that all my life comes from the vine. In communion with Jesus, the vine, my little life can grow and bear fruit. I know it, but I do not live it. Somehow I keep living as if there are other sources of life that I must explore, outside of Jesus. But Jesus keeps saying, "Come back to me, give me all your burdens, all your worries, fears and anxieties. Trust that with me you will find rest.".

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Sabbatical Journey: The Diary of His Final Year, pg 20

Scripture:

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

John 15:1-5

PRAYER
Generous God, pruner and harvester of all my human efforts, teach me how to celebrate life's pains and sorrows so that I can discover in them a deeper love of you and a stronger hope in your promises. Let me not see loss and failure as setbacks, but as opportunities for a more fruitful life. May you always abide in me. Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Review a past sorrow and find in it one positive outcome. Discipline yourself to show gratitude throughout this day on at least several occasions. Look even in the smallest corners for opportunities to nurture a thankful heart.

Lent, Day Nine, First Thursday of Lent

Lent, Day Nine, First Thursday of Lent
Self-Transformation

Jesus...told people not to be guided by the behavior of the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus came among us as an equal, a brother....

You will not be able to meet Jesus in your body while your body remains full of doubts and fears. Jesus came to free you from those bonds and so create in you a space where you can be with him...

Do not despair, thinking that you cannot change yourself after so many years. Simply enter into the presence of Jesus as you are and ask him to give you a fearless heart where he can be with you. You cannot make yourself different. Jesus came to give you a new heart, a new spirit, a new mind, and a new body. Let him transform you by his love...

Henri J.M. Nouwen
The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom, pg 18

Scripture:

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Romans 8:28-32

PRAYER
Creator God, let me recognize in myself the pride and false piety of one who will not admit of the imperfections of being human. Temper my doubts and fears, restore my commitment to your ways.Keep before me your promise of a new heart and a new spirit; prompt me along the path to this transformation in love and conformation to your image. Amen.

 LENTEN ACTION
This Lent keep in mind Martin Buber's observation that "God dwells wherever humans let him in." Take time today to be alone and be aware of the movement of the Holy Spirit within you.

Lent, Day Eight, First Wednesday of Lent

Lent, Day Eight, First Wednesday of Lent
To forgive another person from the heart is an act of liberation. We set that person free from the negative bonds that exist between us. We say, "I no longer hold your offense against you." ... We also free ourselves from the burden of being the "offended one." As long as we do not forgive those who have wounded us, we carry them with us or, worse, pull them as a heavy load. The great temptation is to cling in anger to our enemies and then define ourselves as being offended and wounded by them. Forgiveness, therefore, liberates not only the other but ourselves.

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith, pg

Scripture:

33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

Luke 6:33-37

PRAYER
God, my divine advocate, grant me the spirit of authentic forgiveness. Elevate my thoughts from the pit of retribution and negativity to the liberated place where I am free from the bonds of wounded anger. Let you who for gave your executioners inspire me to forego my obsessive victimhood and free my heart to follow your will. Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Choose one bit of emotional garbage that you are clinging to, get rid of it, and get on with your life. In honor of this act, give a gift to someone else who needs a helping hand.

Lent, Day Seven, First Tuesday of Lent

Lent, Day Seven, First Tuesday of Lent
This morning during my hour of prayer, I tried to come to some level of abandonment to my heavenly Father. It was a hard struggle since so much in me wants to do my will, realize my plans, organize my future, and make my decisions. Still I know that true joy comes from letting God love me the way God wants whether it is through illness or health, failure or success, poverty or wealth, rejection or praise. It is hard for me to day, "I shall gratefully accept everything, Lord, that pleases you. Let your will be done." But I know that when I truely believe my Father is pure love, it will become increasingly possible to say these words from the heart.

Henri J.M. Nouwen
The Road to Daybreak: A Spiritual Journey, pg 14

Scripture:
Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
1 John 2:7, 15-17

PRAYER
Henri Nouwen often said this prayer written by Charles
de Foucauld:

I abandon myself into your hands;
do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you;
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me
and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, 0 Lord.
Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you with all the love of my heart,
for I love you, Lord,
and so need to give myself into your hands,
without reserve and with boundless confidence.
For you are my Father. Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Instead of refusing to accept God's will, especially when it is harsh, say,«Thy will be done!" Give yourself over to unbounded acceptance of the plan that has been mapped out for you by God.

Lent, Day Six, First Monday of Lent

Lent, Day Six, First Monday of  Lent

The word "courage" come from "coeur, which means "heart". To have courage is to listen to our heart, to speak from our heart, and to act from our heart... Often we debate current issues and express our opinions about them. But courage is taking a stance, even an unpopular stance, not because we think differently from others but because from the center of our being we realize how to respond to the situation we are in. Courage does not require spectacular gestures. Courage often starts in small corners: it is courageous not to participate in gossip, not to talk behind someone's back, not to ridicule another. It is courageous to think well of other people and be grateful to them... It is courageous to reach out to a poor person, to spend time with a trouble child, to participate in action to prevent war and violence.

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Sabbatical Journey: The Diary of His Final Year, pg 12

Scripture:

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:29-33

PRAYER
Cherished God, give me true and heartfelt courage that brings strength, resilience, and determination to do what is right rather than. what is expedient and convenient. Let my courage be seen in small ways that reflect the essence of your commandments: let me forego gossip and sarcasm, exercise caution with placing blame, refuse to duck away from responsibility, speak wisely at the appropriate moment, and cultivate compassion and understanding Let me be among those who have the courage of his or her convictions. Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Choose a new tradition to observe this Lent; for example, decorate your home with reminders of the season (purple, incense, thorny branches), make a cross to adorn a home altar, or, imitating a Greek custom, place six feathers in a potato and remove one during each of the weeks of Lent.

Lent, Day Five, First Sunday in Lent

Lent, Day Five, First Sunday in Lent
There is a twilight zone in our own hearts that we ourselves cannot see. Even when we know quite a lot about ourselves--our gifts and weaknesses, our ambitions and aspirations, our motives and drives--large parts of ourselves remain in the shadow of consciousness.

This is a very good thing. We will always remain partially hidden to ourselves. Other people, especially those who love us, can often see our twilight zones better than we ourselves can. The way we are seen and understood by others is different from the way we see and understand ourselves.

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith, pg 10

Scripture:
Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

====

PRAYER
Loving God, take my poor offering of friendship and remind me every day of your invitation to journey with you to the Easter miracle of the Resurrection. Allow me to accept the weaknesses and defects that you and others see in me, but which are hidden from me. Lift me up when I fall and always let me reach, not reject, your outstretched hand of welcome and forgiveness. And, keep my sins and doubts from leaching the joy out of life. Amen.

 LENTEN ACTION
Mentally bless each person you meet today and salute them with loving cheerfulness. Be quick to applaud the accomplishments of others just as our Lord applauds yours.

The First Sunday in Lent

The Collect.
O LORD, who for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights; Give us grace to use such abstinence, that, our flesh being subdued to the Spirit we may ever obey thy godly motions in righteousness, and true holiness, to thy honour and glory, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle. 2 Corinthians vi. 1-10
As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says,
“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[a]
I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

The Gospel. St. Matthew iv. 1-11
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]
Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]
Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Lent, Day Four, Saturday After Ash Wednesday

Lent, Day Four, Saturday After Ash Wednesday
A Time of Reconcile and Refocus
I am certainly not ready for Lent yet... I could have used a few more weeks to get ready for this season of repentance, prayer and preparation.

I spoke about how Jesus stressed the hidden life. Whether we give alms, prayer or fast, we are to do it in a hidden way, not to be praised by people but to enter into closer communion with God. Lent is a time of returning to God. It is a time to confess how we keep looking for joy, peace, and satisfaction in many people and things surrounding us, without really finding what we desire. Only God can give us what we want... Lent is a time of refocusing, of reentering the place of truth, of reclaiming our true identity.

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Sabbatical Journey: The Diary of His Final Year, pg 8

Scripture:
13 that you forget the Lord your Maker,
    who stretches out the heavens
and who lays the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror every day
because of the wrath of the oppressor,
    who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor?
14     The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;
they will not die in their dungeon,
    nor will they lack bread.
15 For I am the Lord your God,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
the Lord Almighty is his name.
16 I have put my words in your mouth
and covered you with the shadow of my hand—
I who set the heavens in place,
who laid the foundations of the earth,
and who say to Zion, ‘You are my people.’
    Isaiah 51:13-16

PRAYER
Savior God, teach me how to reconcile and resolve my internal warfare, confusion, and dissent, so that I can find the calm and hidden place where your peace and protection reside. Let this calm within be the basis for my reconciliation with others. And help me to neutralize the temptations and easy enticements of modern life.Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Look closely at one difficulty you perceive in your life.Give up being the "victim" in this situation and plan to take one positive step to resolve this issue and move toward a settlement. Ask for God's help in this process.

Lent, Day Three, Friday after Ash Wednesday

Lent, Day Three, Friday after Ash Wednesday
We modern Westerners are so busy with ourselves, so preoccupied with the question of whether we do justice to our own selves, that the experience of the "transcendent" becomes practically impossible... In this way of thinking there is scarcely room for Him who speaks whenever we are silent and who comes in whenever we have emptied ourselves. Instead of making ourselves susceptible to the experience of the transcendent God, we, busy with many things, begin to seek after the small flighty sensations brought about by the artificial stimulation of the senses.

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Thomas Merton: Contemplative Critic, pg 6

Scripture:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

James 1:2-4, 9-11

PRAYER
Almighty God, help me joyfully to put "first things first" today. Forgive me when I have allowed the artificial concerns of this whirlwind life to overwhelm the space in my heart that should be prepared for your presence. When I become preoccupied with self, put me back on the track of commitment to you. Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Give your energy today to holding yourself accountable for your actions. Promise yourself to give up just one self-indulgence for the day; for example, a morning cup of caffeine, the daily newspaper, dessert after dinner, or so on.

Lent, Day Two, Thursday after Ash Wednesday

Lent, Day Two, Thursday after Ash Wednesday

Discipline: Preparing a Place for God
Discipline in the spiritual life is the concentrated effort to create the space and time where God can become our master and where we can respond freely to God's guidance. Thus, discipline is the creation of boundaries that keep time and space open for God--a time and a place where God's gracious presence can be acknowledged and responded to..

Henri J.M. Nouwen
Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith, pg 4

Scripture:
14 If you fear the Lord, you will accept his correction. He will bless those who get up early in the morning to pray. 15 Study his Law, and you will master it, unless you are insincere about it, in which case you will fail. 16 If you fear the Lord, you will know what is right, and you will be famous for your fairness. 17 Sinners have no use for correction, and will interpret the Law to suit themselves.

20 Don't take a course of action that is dangerous, and don't make the same mistake twice.[c] 21 Don't be too sure of yourself, even when the way looks easy. 22 Always watch where you are going.[d] 23 Whatever you do be careful;[e] this is keeping the Lord's commands.
     Sirach 32:14-17, 20-23

PRAYER
Holy God, give me the discipline it takes to keep my heart open to your word. Do not let the anger of resentment sidetrack me from the priority of seeking my true home with you. Please give me what it takes to recognize that any personal rejections, real or imagined, are only reminders of an imperfect world. Bestow your grace on me so that life's disappointments will bring out the best in me and not the worst. Amen.

LENTEN ACTION
Make it a point to retreat from life's fast lane for the duration of this Lenten observance in order to  nurture and grow an attachment to the Lord's incarnation, passion, death, and resurrection. Select and set aside a prayer time to meditate and respond to God's gracious presence.

Lent-Day One, Ash Wednesday

Lent, Day One (Ash Wednesday)

A Promise of Lent
I have slowly become aware of what my Lenten practice might be. It might be the development of some type of "holy indifference" toward the many small rejections I am subject to, and a growing attachment to The Lord an his passion.

I am constantly surprised at how hard it s for me to deal with the little rejections people inflict on each other day by day.... This atmosphere often leaves me with a feeling of being rejected and left alone. When I swallow those rejections, I get quickly depressed and lonely; then I am n danger of becoming resentful....

But maybe all of this is the other side of a deep mystery, the mystery that we have no lasting dwelling place on this earth and that only God loves us the way we desire to be loved. Maybe all these small rejections are reminders that I am a traveler on the way to a sacred place where God holds me in the palm of his hand.

Henri J.M. Nouwen, Gracias! A Latin American Journal, pg 2

5“Through all your days, son, keep the Lord in mind, and do not seek to sin or to transgress the commandments. Perform righteous deeds all the days of your life, and do not tread the paths of wickedness. 6b For those who act with fidelity, all who practice righteousness, will prosper in their affairs.*
7“Give alms from your possessions. Do not turn your face away from any of the poor, so that God’s face will not be turned away from you.c 8Give in proportion to what you own. If you have great wealth, give alms out of your abundance; if you have but little, do not be afraid to give alms even of that little. 9You will be storing up a goodly treasure for yourself against the day of adversity.d 10For almsgiving delivers from death and keeps one from entering into Darkness. 11Almsgiving is a worthy offering in the sight of the Most High for all who practice it. Tobit 4:5-11

PRAYER
Lord, our Savior, let me heed the example of total giving that you demonstrated when you died on the cross for my sins. I pray that my pale imitation of your sacrifice during this Lent may be counted on my behalf "against the day of necessity."

LENTEN ACTION
Just for today, lay up a "good treasure" for yourself by ignoring your selfish wants and needs and choosing instead to seek and do our Lord's will, both at home and at work. Let your rule of thumb be placing the good of others above your own.

From the Book of Common Prayer

On this day, the Celebrant begins the liturgy with the Salutation and the Collect of the Day.
Let us pray.
Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have
made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and
make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily
lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness,
may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission
and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever
and ever. Amen.
Old Testament Joel 2:1-2, 12-17, or Isaiah 58:1-12
Psalm 103, or 103:8-14
Epistle 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10
Gospel Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
After the Sermon, all stand, and the Celebrant or Minister appointed
invites the people to the observance of a holy Lent, saying
Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great
devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and
it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a
season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the
observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance;
by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and
meditating on God's holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer.

Silence is then kept for a time, all kneeling.

If ashes are to be imposed, the Celebrant says the following prayer

Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
The ashes are imposed with the following words
Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
The following Psalm is then sung or said
Psalm 51 Miserere mei, Deus
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your
loving-kindness; *
in your great compassion blot out my offenses.
2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness *
and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions, *
and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you only have I sinned *
and done what is evil in your sight.
5 And so you are justified when you speak *
and upright in your judgment
6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, *
a sinner from my mother's womb.
7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me, *
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.
8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure;
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.
9 Make me hear of joy and gladness, *
that the body you have broken may rejoice.
10 Hide your face from my sins *
and blot out all my iniquities.
11 Create in me a clean heart, O God, *
and renew a right spirit within me.
12 Cast me not away from your presence *
and take not your holy Spirit from me.
13 Give me the joy of your saving help again *
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

14 I shall teach your ways to the wicked, *
and sinners shall return to you.
15 Deliver me from death, O God, *
and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness,
O God of my salvation.
16 Open my lips, O Lord, *
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
17 Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice; *
but you take no delight in burnt-offerings.
18 The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit; *
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Litany of Penitence
The Celebrant and People together, all kneeling
Most holy and merciful Father:
We confess to you and to one another,
and to the whole communion of saints
in heaven and on earth,
that we have sinned by our own fault
in thought, word, and deed;
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
The Celebrant continues
We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and
strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We
have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us.
We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved
your Holy Spirit.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the
pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation
of other people,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those
more fortunate than ourselves,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and
our dishonesty in daily life and work,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to
commend the faith that is in us,
We confess to you, Lord.
Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done:
for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our
indifference to injustice and cruelty,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our
neighbors, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those
who differ from us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For our waste and pollution of your creation, and our lack of
concern for those who come after us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us;
Favorably hear us, for your mercy is great.
Accomplish in us the work of your salvation,
That we may show forth your glory in the world.

By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,
Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.
The Bishop, if present, or the Priest, stands and, facing the people, says
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
desires not the death of sinners, but rather that they may turn
from their wickedness and live, has given power and
commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to
his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of
their sins. He pardons and absolves all those who truly
repent, and with sincere hearts believe his holy Gospel.
Therefore we beseech him to grant us true repentance and his
Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do on
this day, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure
and holy, so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
